It seems incredible, but almost every action a company takes leaves a footprint. Sometimes these are positive legacies, but in other cases, these footprints translate into emissions linked to transportation or manufacturing, among other activities.
In 2022, the Spanish economy emitted 304.4 million tons of greenhouse gases, according to the INE. While it is true that they are following a downward trend, there is still much room for improvement.
To help Asturian companies on this path, the Principality of Asturias has launched a new call for grants to finance the calculation of the carbon footprint, the development of emission reduction plans and CO2 absorption projects.
The best part? You can cover up to 80% of the cost and, in addition, TAXUS Environment will accompany you in this process. Of course, you have until May 13, 2025 to apply for this aid.
What is the carbon footprint and what are the advantages of measuring it?
Carbon footprint is defined as “the total greenhouse gases emitted directly or indirectly by an individual, organization, event or product”.
On the one hand, we find the carbon footprint of an organization, which measures the total Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emitted by direct or indirect effect from the development of the activity of that organization.
There is also the product carbon footprint, which measures the GHGs emitted during the entire life cycle of a product: from the extraction of raw materials, through processing and manufacturing and distribution, to the use and end-of-life stage (deposit, reuse or recycling).
What are the advantages of measuring a company’s carbon footprint?
- Detect opportunities for energy efficiency improvement.
- Anticipate future regulatory requirements
- Promote the company’s image with customers, suppliers, administration, employees and society.
- Access to public tenders
In Asturias, the Government of the Principality has created its own Carbon Footprint Registry, a project that allows companies to make their commitment to sustainability visible in a simple, transparent and official way.
What grants are available in Asturias?
The Ministry of Ecological Transition, Industry and Commerce approved the 2025 public call for subsidies, on a competitive basis, to finance the calculation of the carbon footprint and the development of CO2 absorption projects for their registration in the carbon footprint registry for the reduction, absorption and offsetting of greenhouse gas emissions.
It should be noted that the line is aimed at self-employed and SMEs with activity in Asturias.
First of all, let’s take a quick look at what it means to enroll in section A and section B.
- Section A: organizations that have a center of activity located in the Principality of Asturias and that calculate their carbon footprint and implement actions aimed at its reduction.
- Section B: organizations that carry out and own CO2 absorption projects located in the territory of the Principality of Asturias.
Now, we highlight some of the most relevant aspects of this call:
For companies registering in section A up to a maximum of €5,000, distributed as follows:
- 80% of the expenses corresponding to the calculation of the carbon footprint, the preparation of the carbon footprint report and the drafting of a carbon footprint reduction plan, provided that the resulting amount does not exceed €3,000.
- 80% of the costs corresponding to the verification of the carbon footprint information subject to registration, provided that the resulting amount does not exceed €2,000.
For companies registering in section B up to a maximum of €4,000, distributed as follows:
- 80% of the expenses corresponding to the elaboration of a CO2 absorption project, provided that the resulting amount does not exceed 1,600 €.
- 80% of the expenses corresponding to the elaboration of a forest management instrument, provided that the resulting amount does not exceed €1,600.
- 80% of the expenses corresponding to the sustainable forestry certification, provided that the resulting amount does not exceed 800 €.
